Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp optimistic over new Emre Can contract

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp has said he is confident that Emre Can will sign a new Liverpool contract.

Can will enter the final 12 months of his current deal in the summer, with his representatives and the club in discussions over extending his stay.

The Germany midfielder was the match-winner in Monday's 1-0 victory at Watford, scoring a spectacular bicycle kick.

"His bicycle kicking is much better than before -- his biggest improvement!" Klopp said at a news conference. "He's a hard-working boy. He has always had a fantastic attitude.

"It's like last week with Dejan Lovren [and his new contract]. After this game everybody wants him to sign, after that game everybody wants to send him away or whatever.

"Now with Emre, after a bicycle kick, probably everyone wants him to stay. He likes the club and it's a completely normal situation that we are in talks with him.

"There's absolutely no pressure, it's all good -- two partners who have big respect for each other."

Klopp said the fact that Liverpool "can keep good players really makes sense for development," adding: "He is one of these good players. I'm quite positive."

Can is likely to keep his place in the starting line for Sunday's home match against Southampton, while Klopp is "positive" that Philippe Coutinho will be fit enough to play after suffering a dead leg at Watford.

Sources told ESPN FC the Brazil international took part in a light training session on Thursday to maximise his chances.

Klopp said: "We cannot be 100 percent sure because we always have to wait to see how he improves but, at this moment, it looks rather positive."

Striker Daniel Sturridge is being carefully monitored as he returns from a lingering hip strain, having come on as a substitute at Vicarage Road.

"It was very good," Klopp said of the striker's outing. "It's not that we can say he's at 100 percent. He's doing what we think is right for him and to keep him on track for the last three games.

"It's really important that we have him as an option on the bench and can bring him on, because everybody knows he can decide a game in a second."

Meanwhile, Klopp said there was "nothing new" to report on the fitness of captain Jordan Henderson, who has been absent since February with a foot injury.

But he said both Sadio Mane and Danny Ings were making good progress in their recovery from long-term injuries.

Klopp added that there was "no chance" Mane could face his former club Southampton, while Ings "is enjoying training now for the first time with the ball and is in a good way."
