Ian Rush refuses to rule out Steven Gerrard cameo in Sydney FC friendly

Ian Rush has fuelled speculation that Steven Gerrard could pull the Liverpool shirt back on for next month's showdown with Sydney FC, declaring the retired Anfield icon is still in top physical condition.

A one-off comeback for the Reds' first trip to Sydney on May 24 at ANZ Stadium may yet be on the cards for Gerrard in a match that fellow club legend Rush has assured will feature the best of the Reds.

"Everyone that's available and fit will be coming out," Rush told the Australian Associated Press.

If true, the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino can be expected to make the trip along with Adam Lallana, though injured Sadio Mane appears an unlikely bet.

It will be a mighty tight turnaround for the Reds, who play their final Premier League fixture at home to Middlesbrough just three days earlier on May 21.

Unsurprisingly, Gerrard was the major attraction when more than 40,000 turned out at ANZ Stadium for last January's match between retired Socceroos and Liverpool legends -- just as he was at a packed MCG in 2013 when he scored the opening goal in the Reds' 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory.

Should the 36-year-old return for a game directly preceding Liverpool's 125th anniversary celebrations on June 3, organisers should indeed get the sell-out they expect.

Only last month Gerrard scored a superb goal in a Liverpool Legends clash with Real Madrid Legends at Anfield.

It was a moment that confirmed for Rush the former LA Galaxy man and current Reds academy coach still had what it took to keep up with the best.

"I was lucky enough to play with Steven in the Legends game a few weeks ago," Rush said.

"He works at the academy, he keeps himself fit.

"At the end of the day this is a first-team squad game, it's not a Legends game, so you've got to take it serious.

"But in saying that, if he is going to take it serious there's no one better than Steven Gerrard because he keeps himself fit."

The clash will give the Sky Blues a chance to test their scintillating domestic form against one of the world's best sides, who have dropped out of the Premier League title race and sit third with six games to play.

Graham Arnold's squad will then face another Premier League giant in Arsenal on July 13.
