Liverpool's warm-weather training camp hailed by Sadio Mane, Joel Matip

Sadio Mane and Joel Matip have both spoken of the benefits the Liverpool squad gained from their recent midseason trip to Spain.

Liverpool have just returned from a warm-weather training camp in La Manga, with manager Jurgen Klopp using his side's lengthy break due to their FA Cup exit last month as an opportunity for another "preseason."

Mane says the trip helped increase the understanding between teammates throughout the entire squad.

"It went very well," he told the club's official website. "We had a good time but we also worked very hard, we trained together well and we also had a friendly game amongst ourselves. The weather wasn't brilliant but a bit better than here.

"It was just like [a preseason]. OK, the weather was good and we had a good time, but the training sessions were very intense so it was like a preseason. It was good to bring the team together again because we had a break after Tottenham. We shared rooms so we were spending time together and getting to know each other as people as well as the training side."

Matip echoed his teammate's comments, telling the Liverpool Echo: "It was intense but great. We are on a good way.

"It was a good five days -- spending time together with your teammates and laughing a lot. We worked hard and then away from training we had some funny moments. We are all working together. We all want to win. We are all getting closer and closer, and that can only help us to achieve good things."

Liverpool will now turn their attention towards Monday's trip to the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City.

Despite the Premier League champions sitting just one place above the relegation zone, Matip says he is under no illusions about the talent still present in Claudio Ranieri's struggling side.

"Last year was a fantastic season for Leicester but this season they have found it more difficult," he said. "They have been playing with more pressure maybe and everybody thought differently about them. They have found it hard but they have quality in their team. It will be a hard game.

"Leicester showed their quality when they won the league and most of those players are still there. We have to show everything we have in order to win. We hope that beating Tottenham was a positive sign. Now we need to continue like this and keep on a winning track."

Matip's centre-back partner Dejan Lovren has been forced to miss Liverpool's last two games with a persistent knee injury, which has seen him travel to Germany for consultation on the issue.

Lucas Leiva has deputised for him and Matip paid tribute to Liverpool's long-standing player.

"Lucas has done a very good job. He played brilliantly in the last game against Tottenham," Matip said. "I try to help him. Normally, he's a midfielder but he's performed like he's always been a centre-back."
