Liverpool to leave Melwood for Kirkby in training centre merger - source

Liverpool are planning to transform their Kirkby academy into a training facility for both the first-team and youth sides, a source has told ESPN FC.

The club have used Melwood as their first-team training base since the 1950s and it is located just over five miles away from Kirkby.

However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp first publicly suggested that Melwood and Kirkby may need to be brought closer together after a preseason friendly at Tranmere Rovers back in July -- the same day he penned a six-year contract extension at the club.

The source added that an announcement from Liverpool and Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council confirming the plans could be expected as early as Wednesday.

The Liverpool Echo reports that the proposed project will cost around £50 million and that the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, have committed the funds for it to be completed.

The report states that the club are looking to purchase 14 acres of land at the rear of the Kirkby complex in order to expand the size of the current site.

Liverpool's Kirkby site was first opened in 1998 and is currently headed by academy director Alex Inglethorpe, who signed a contract extension back in November.
