Lucas Leiva shocked to learn length of Liverpool goal drought

Lucas Leiva could not believe how long it had been since he last scored after his goal against Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday night was enough for a 1-0 win that takes Liverpool to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Brazilian, 30, netted his first competitive goal since September 2010 with a powerful header off Philippe Coutinho's corner kick in the 19th minute.

Liverpool won the third-round replay despite some nervy second-half moments and a Divock Origi having penalty kick being saved late on in the contest at Home Park.

When informed by BT Sport postmatch that he had ended his six-year goal drought, Lucas replied: "Is it that long? I scored last week in training.

"It's good to score, I don't score many. I helped the team and that's the main thing."

A young Liverpool side safely progressed to the fourth round of the competition and will now face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

Lucas praised Argyle for pushing Liverpool all the way, but believes the two encounters with the League Two side will benefit the likes of Ben Woodburn, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ovie Ejaria and debutant Harry Wilson.

"I think they made it very difficult for us," Lucas added. "Fair play to them. They played fair and [were] on the ball all the time.

"They were strong physically and we had a lot young players, but it was a good experience.

"The main thing was to get through to the next round and we did it."
