Liverpool send Mamadou Sakho home from U.S. tour - source

PASADENA, Calif. -- Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has been sent home from Liverpool's preseason tour, a club source has confirmed to ESPN FC.

The French defender returned to the UK on Tuesday after leaving his teammates in the United States on Monday.

Liverpool did not disclose the reasons for the 26-year-old's abrupt departure, but the source did say it was manager Jurgen Klopp's decision and that Sakho will continue rehabilitation work on his injured Achilles at Melwood -- the club's training ground.

The Liverpool Echo and The Guardian reported that Sakho faces an uncertain Anfield future after Klopp made the call to send him home following alleged concerns about Sakho's attitude around the side's training base in Palo Alto.

Sakho will be the only injured player to have been released from the tour, with Joe Gomez and Lucas Leiva staying with the squad even though they are unable to feature in any of Liverpool's friendlies.

The reports add that the Frenchman was booked on the same flight to Heathrow, London, as Brad Smith, who is close to completing a £6 million move to Bournemouth.

Sakho has not featured in any of Liverpool's friendlies this summer because of his Achilles, which will force him to sit out the start of the Premier League season.

The defender last played for the Reds in April after he was suspended by UEFA for allegedly failing a drugs test. However, the case against him was dismissed earlier this month and he was free to resume his Liverpool career.

Meanwhile, Liverpool continue their preseason schedule as they flew out to Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The Reds face Premier League rivals Chelsea on Wednesday at the Rose Bowl as part of the International Champions Cup.
