Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet welcomes Loris Karius to Anfield

Simon Mignolet has welcomed the arrival of Loris Karius at Liverpool by predicting that the added competition will make him a better goalkeeper.

Karius, 22, joined the Reds from German club Mainz last month in a £4.7 million deal which has led to speculation that Mignolet could face a battle to retain his starting spot despite signing a contract extension in January.

Speaking at Belgium's Euro 2016 headquarters in Bordeaux, however, Mignolet put the signing of Karius in a positive light.

"For me if there's competition, it's always good for a team to be at the highest level," Mignolet told reporters.

"Here it's the same. With all the players that we have, for every place and every position there are two players going for it.

"Competition only allows you to improve individually -- you become better."

When asked if Klopp had guaranteed that he would still be Liverpool's first-choice keeper next season, Mignolet said: "I don't think you get a guarantee at any club in any position."
