Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool fans chanting my name 'a bit awkward'

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says hearing the Anfield crowd singing his name during the 3-0 victory over Villarreal was a "good moment" but "a bit awkward."

Liverpool reached the Europa League final on Thursday after a 3-1 aggregate victory over Villarreal, having dispatched Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund in the previous rounds.

"I am just proud of my lads," he told Germany's Sport 1 after the game. "It's madness what they hammered out tonight. The first 30 minutes were extraordinary. What a performance, and that power!"

Klopp, who took charge in October, has made an impressive start to life at Liverpool, having also overseen a penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup final in February.

The fans made clear their appreciation for his work on Thursday, chanting his name during and after the victory over Villarreal.

"It's a bit awkward," he said. "They don't have to sing my name. It would be quite cool if they could leave it."

The Liverpool Echo also quoted him as saying: "I heard the crowd sing my name after the game and that was a good moment but, please, no one has to sing my name. I'm part of the team. I love football because I love being part of the team."

The former Borussia Dortmund coach also drew praise from Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, who told reporters: "He changed many players, even me. We play with a smile."

Liverpool were boosted for the second leg by the return of Emre Can, and the Germany international made sure to highlight the extraordinary work the club's physiotherapists did to help him return following his ankle injury after just three weeks on the sidelines.

"I wanted to be part of this team by all means," he told Sport1. "My thanks go out to the physiotherapists. One of them is actually from Villarreal."

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure, meanwhile, thanked his suspended teammate Mamadou Sakho.

The 26-year-old scored a crucial goal in the dramatic 4-3 defeat of Dortmund in the quarterfinals but has since been handed a provisional 30-day suspension for an anti-doping violation.

"I dedicate this victory to Mamadou Sakho too because I think he would have liked to be here," Toure told BeIN Sports. "It's also thanks to him that we're here. He's certainly going through some quite difficult moments but we're with him. So I really want to dedicate this victory to him."
