Jordan Henderson out six to eight weeks with knee ligament damage

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury that will keep him out for around six to eight weeks.

Henderson, 25, damaged the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his left knee during Thursday's 1-1 Europa League quarterfinal first leg draw at Borussia Dortmund.

He underwent a scan in Liverpool on Friday lunchtime to determine the extent of the injury, and the club confirmed the result on their official website.

The positive news for the player is that it is an LCL problem rather than a cruciate ligament -- which is far more serious -- and there is limited damage.

A typical LCL injury can often require three months recovery, but Henderson will not need surgery, just treatment and rehabilitation.

The Liverpool statement said: "Henderson's issue appears to be less serious and, provided all goes well with the midfielder's recovery programme, the time out of action could be limited to between six and eight weeks."

England coach Roy Hodgson will name his Euro 2016 squad on May 12, three days before the end of the Premier League season, with their first warm-up game against Turkey on May 22.

Even in a best-case scenario, Henderson would only be close to a return by that later date.

He would also be lacking match fitness, meaning it would represent a major gamble by Hodgson to pick him.
