Liverpool's Jordan Henderson delighted with first start since return

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said his fitness had been "fine so far" as he continued his comeback from injury in his side's Europa League draw at Sion.

The Merseysiders, who finished top of their group, were held 0-0 in a game of few chances on an icy pitch in Switzerland.

Henderson was promoted to Anfield skipper in July by Brendan Rodgers following Steven Gerrard's departure to LA Galaxy, but has only just returned to action after aggravating a heel injury in August and then breaking his foot during training a month later.

The 25-year-old, starting for the first time since Liverpool played Bournemouth early in the season, told the Liverpool Echo: "It was nice to play 75 minutes. It was a tough game in tough conditions, but we're top of the group and we move forward.

"It [his fitness] was tested tonight on that pitch, and I had no problem. Hopefully I've just got to keep managing it -- it's been fine so far."

Henderson praised the performance of Australian defender Brad Smith, making his full debut for the club, as "brilliant."

"It was Brad's first start and I thought he was outstanding, brilliant going up and down the left flank," he said. "He was dangerous for us, getting good crosses in."

Full-back Smith, 21, said starting his first game for the club had been "an honour."

Henderson has been told that there is no medical cure for his heel injury, and he must manage the pain and hope that it improves with time.
