Liverpool would be a great fit for Jurgen Klopp, says Mats Hummels

Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels says that Liverpool seems a suitable club for someone who lives and breathes football the way Jurgen Klopp does.

Former Dortmund manager Klopp, 48, is widely expected to replace the departed Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool coach by the end of the week.

Hummels, 26, was a Dortmund player for all of Klopp's seven years in charge at Dortmund, and together they won two Bundesliga titles, one German Cup and reached the final of the 2013 Champions League.

The Dortmund centre-back is on international duty with Germany this week. When asked about his former boss, Hummels initially said he would rather not comment until news of Klopp's arrival at Anfield was made official.

After being pressed on what sort of manager Klopp is, however, the former Bayern Munich player laughed as he finally opened up.

"It's hardly a surprise [to hear] that in my opinion he's a fantastic coach," Hummels told a news conference in Dublin ahead of Thursday's Euro 2016 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland.

"I think if you have ever thought about what he might do after Dortmund then probably the club that's being talked about at the moment is certainly one that you could see him at. He's somebody who lives for football every day and every minute.

"I'm obviously also going to follow with great interest what he does next and how it will go. I'll cross my fingers for him that he'll be just as successful as he was at Dortmund."

Liverpool's Emre Can, Ilkay Gundogan of Borussia Dortmund and former Germany internationals Steffen Freund and Franz Beckenbauer have all suggested that Klopp would fit right in at Liverpool.

Also speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Germany coach Joachim Low joined the long list of people who felt the former Mainz manager could prove a hit on Merseyside.

"I only read this morning that there are discussions," he said.

"Jurgen Klopp is a coach who was extremely successful in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and awakened in Dortmund so many fantastic emotions.

"Viewed purely from a distance, there are certain parallels with Dortmund and Liverpool -- an incredible fan culture, lots of emotions, lots of traditions.

So I think if [negotiations] work out, Jurgen Klopp can bring any team forward -- including Liverpool."

Low was also asked if he himself had any interest in working in the Premier League one day. The 55-year-old replied by saying that he had a contract until 2018, was enjoying his job with the world champions and was focused on leading Germany into the next European Championships and World Cup.
