Jose Enrique has been left out of Liverpool's Europa League squad despite his pledge to focus on winning back a first-team place.
The 29-year-old shut down his Twitter and Instagram accounts on Tuesday in an attempt to show he is ready to concentrate on improving his game.
Jose Enrique has received heavy criticism from fans for a perceived excessive use of social media, with the defender regularly posting pictures of himself enjoying leisure time and holidays. Before he closed his accounts, he did promise to fight for his place at Liverpool after failing to secure a transfer deadline day move away from the club.
The defender, who has not been selected by manager Brendan Rodgers since January, has been frozen out at Anfield, and has been made to train away from the first-team squad.
Rodgers has 24 eligible senior players on his books, but could only select a maximum of 22 for his Europa League 'A' list squad because of UEFA restrictions.
Like in the Premier League, clubs can pick up to 25 senior professionals, with a minimum of eight places reserved for homegrown players.
However, UEFA has the additional requirement that four of those homegrown places must be set aside for club-trained players (classified as anyone who has spent three years with the club before the end of the season during which they turn 21.)
As a result, Liverpool lose three of those homegrown places, because they only have one senior club-trained player, defender Jon Flanagan.
They have effectively lost a fourth place now as well. Flanagan is recovering from knee surgery and is not expected to be fit in time to play any part in the group stage -- meaning that Rodgers has left him out of the squad too.
As a result, the manager has submitted a squad of 21 players, omitting Portuguese midfielder Joao Carlos Teixeira as well as Enrique.
UEFA do allow clubs to pick an unlimited number of under-21 players on what is known as a 'B' list -- but to be eligible, a player has to have been both born after Jan. 1, 1994, and to have had an uninterrupted two-year spell with the club at some point since the age of 15.
Joe Gomez, Emre Can and Divock Origi would all be classified as under-21 players by age, but cannot be included on the 'B' list as they do not have the required two years of uninterrupted service at Anfield. It means that all three have been included in Rodgers' 'A' list instead.
Winger Jordon Ibe, born in December 1995, has been with Liverpool since the beginning of 2012 and thus can be included on the 'B' list.
Clubs can make three changes to their squad before the knockout stage, if they get there.
