Nathaniel Clyne tips Liverpool for Premier League title contention

Nathaniel Clyne has tipped Liverpool for a Premier League title challenge this season.

The Reds have not been champions of England since 1990, but almost ended that wait in 2014 when they finished as runners-up to Manchester City.

Brendan Rodgers' side slipped to sixth last season, missing out on Champions League qualification after picking up just eight points from their final nine matches.

England right-back Clyne, signed by Rodgers from Southampton on July 1, thinks the Reds can regain a position among the title contenders.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "Two seasons ago, Liverpool were pushing and nearly won the league, so we're not too far away and with the additions to the team this year, we are looking to push on again. I hope we can push for the title this season.

"You can see with the team and the quality that we have got that we can have a special season."

Clyne, 24, is one of eight signings Liverpool have made this summer, and the fourth to move from Southampton in the last 15 months.

Striker Rickie Lambert's year at Anfield ended with a move to West Brom last Friday, while centre-back Dejan Lovren and midfielder Adam Lallana are hoping for improvement after difficult first seasons on Merseyside.

Clyne, though, feels that he can handle the pressure of playing for Liverpool, having spoken to Lovren and Lallana.

"They told me about how good the club is and it would be exciting if I joined them," Clyne said. "When Liverpool came in for me, it just seemed like the right choice. I spoke with my agent and my family and they agreed.

"I'm confident in my ability and the player I am that I can make the next step up. I wouldn't have moved if I didn't think I was ready.

"I'm fairly confident defending and on one-on-ones, and I still think there is more in me for getting forward. If I can add to my game going forward, that would be great."
