Liverpool to announce Sean O'Driscoll appointment as assistant manager

Liverpool are set to announce the appointment of Sean O'Driscoll as their new assistant manager on Monday, sources have told ESPN FC.

O'Driscoll is ready to take up his new role at Anfield after negotiating with the Football Association to leave his role as England Under-19 coach.

He will replace Colin Pascoe, who was sacked on June 6 following an end-of-season review by Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's Boston-based owners.

The appointment suggests that, despite the departures of both Pascoe and first-team coach Mike Marsh during the close season, FSG remain supportive of Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool boss Rodgers admitted after a poor finish to last season that there were doubts about his future, saying: "If the owners want me to go, I go."

But FSG backed the manager following the review, and have approved his choice as the new assistant boss.

O'Driscoll developed a reputation for building attractive football teams on relatively small budgets outside the Premier League during his spells in charge at Bournemouth and Doncaster.

He took Doncaster into the Championship for the first time in 50 years when getting them promoted from League One in 2008.

The 58-year-old was relegated from the Championship with Bristol City in 2013 after a short spell in charge at Nottingham Forest.

O'Driscoll, who had led the England Under-19 side for the past nine months, has never played, coached or managed in the Premier League.

He was, though, interviewed for the manager's job at Burnley in January 2010, when they were a top-flight club -- with the position instead going to Brian Laws.

Rodgers has long been a fan of O'Driscoll, describing him in 2013 as "one of the best coaches I have ever come across."

Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto will be allowed to leave the club on loan again this season.

The former Spain Under-21 international, 22, has struggled to make an impact since arriving from Sevilla for £6.8m in 2013.

He spent last season on loan at Malaga, and Deportivo La Coruna are reportedly interested in taking him for this coming campaign.
