Mamadou Sakho committed to Liverpool after injury-hit season

Mamadou Sakho has vowed to stay at Liverpool where he hopes to "achieve great things" despite a mediocre season.

Sakho, 25, made just 16 Premier League appearances last season during a campaign disrupted by injuries, and the France international faces fierce competition for a place in central defence from Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure.

However, having worked his way back into the first team in the latter stages of the season, he told media he will still be a member of Brendan Rodgers' squad come August.

"I really like it at Liverpool. Of course I'll still be a Red next season," Sakho explained at the French national team's training camp outside Paris. "I have a lot to prove still in a young and talented team and I hope we'll achieve great things."

The centre-back, who moved to Anfield from Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, added: "I still have a lot of things to show there. I have had some niggles, and I'm going to have to put in a lot of effort on many things during preseason, but that doesn't worry me at all. I returned near the end of the season and I played a lot then."

Meanwhile, Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti has demanded talks before comitting himself to the Ligue 1 club with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal circling.

British media recently reported Umtiti, 21, is on the wanted list of the Premier League trio with Liverpool particularly interested in the France Under-21 centre-back, should Martin Skrtel leave Anfield this summer.

Lyon have shown themselves determined to fend off suitors for their top talents, and Umtiti, who is under contract until 2017, has been offered an extension.

However, he first wants guarantees from president Jean-Michel Aulas that the seven-time Ligue 1 champions will have a squad capable of challenging for domestic honours, and be competitive upon the club's return to the Champions League next season.

"I think that when preseason starts, we'll have talks with the president," Umtiti told RMC. "I have to be sure the club's ambition matches my own. That's why we'll have talks on the matter. If we want to have a competitive team to play on all fronts, we need to strengthen to have more experience and a bigger squad.

"I need to know quite a few things. You can never be 100 percent sure of staying. I'm at Lyon and I feel good. I can happily extend my contract. Anything is possible, but I can't tell you everything. There's interest from certain clubs. I still have steps to take. I'm improving."
