Liverpool coach Mike Marsh to exit Anfield after end-of-season review

Liverpool first-team coach Mike Marsh has lost his job as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to reshape his backroom setup for next season, sources have told ESPN FC.

Marsh's contract has not been renewed following an end-of-season review at Anfield.

Rodgers was confirmed as safe in his role following a meeting on Tuesday with chairman Tom Werner and Mike Gordon, president of the club's American owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

But former Liverpool player Marsh has been told his contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of June.

Goalkeeping coach John Achterberg, whose position was also believed to have been under threat, will remain at the club.

Marsh, 45, began his career at Liverpool, making 101 appearances between 1989 and 1993 before going on to play for West Ham and Coventry.

He returned to Anfield as a youth coach in 2009, taking charge of the Under-18 side two years later and being promoted to first-team duties when Rodgers arrived from Swansea in 2012.

Marsh is the first high-profile departure from Liverpool since FSG's latest annual review, which took on extra significance following the club's poor finish to the season.

The Reds took just eight points from their final nine Premier League games to finish sixth, and Rodgers said after the 6-1 humiliation at Stoke: "If the owners want me to go, I go."

But FSG have continued to support the manager, allowing him to sign midfielder James Milner on a free transfer from Manchester City.

Rodgers is also looking to bring in striker Danny Ings from Burnley, and remains interested in Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke and Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne.
