James Milner, Liverpool close to deal ahead of talks - sources

Liverpool are set to hold talks with James Milner in the hope of securing a deal to sign him within days, sources confirmed to ESPN FC.

The midfielder, whose contract at Manchester City is about to expire, is expected to agree to move to Anfield on a free transfer, sources said. Multiple British outlets, including the Guardian and the BBC, earlier reported the news.

If the deal is completed, Milner would officially join the Reds on July 1.

Liverpool are confident of signing the England international despite not being able to offer him Champions League football next season.

Manager Brendan Rodgers sees Milner as a key figure in rebuilding a midfield that will be without departing captain Steven Gerrard.

Milner has been frustrated at being an irregular starter for Manchester City under Manuel Pellegrini.

The 29-year-old, signed for £26 million from Aston Villa in 2010, refused to enter into talks over a new City deal last summer at the end of a season in which he had made only 12 league starts.

Milner started 18 league games for Pellegrini's side during the season just completed but is likely to get more first-team chances at Anfield.

Rodgers, who faces a review of Liverpool's disappointing season with chairman Tom Werner on Wednesday, is also looking to secure Burnley's 22-year-old out-of-contract striker Danny Ings, and remains interested in Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke.

Liverpool would have to pay for Ings, as he is under 24, with the fee to be set by a tribunal.
