Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge declares hip surgery a success

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge says he has had successful surgery in the United States on the torn hip muscle that is set to keep him out for the final weeks of the season.

Sturridge flew to the U.S. at the end of April to determine whether he needed an operation to sort out the problem.

He took the advice of Dr. Peter Asnis, who works with the Boston Red Sox, the Major League Baseball team owned, like Liverpool, by Fenway Sports Group.

The medical opinion was that surgery was needed -- and the England international confirmed that in a message posted on his Instagram account, accompanied by a photograph of himself recovering in a hospital bed.

He wrote on Tuesday: "Just want to let the world know I've had a successful operation on my hip today and I want to thank God for allowing that to be possible.

"Onwards and upwards from here. Thanks for the support. Daniel x"

Sturridge, who signed from Chelsea for £12 million in January 2013, scored 24 goals in all competitions last season as Liverpool finished as Premier League runners-up. But he has made just seven Premier League starts this season after suffering four separate injury setbacks.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has indicated that he is unwilling to rely on a striker who is so injury prone; and although Sturridge will be given every chance to prove he can stay fit once he has recovered, the club will make signing a forward a priority during the forthcoming transfer window.

The 25-year-old suffered a thigh strain during an England training session in September, and then a calf problem the following month as he was nearing a comeback.

A second thigh injury, sustained while training with his club in November, further delayed his return to action and he did not play again until the end of January.

He tore his hip muscle during Liverpool's 2-1 Premier League defeat at home to Manchester United on Mar. 22. Although he was able to play in the club's next two matches, he hasn't figured since.
