Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers 'unsure' of Daniel Sturridge return date

LIVERPOOL -- Liverpool are "unsure" how long Daniel Sturridge's latest injury will keep him out of action, manager Brendan Rodgers says.

Sturridge will miss Saturday's Premier League trip to West Brom with a torn hip muscle, and Rodgers has been unable to give a likely return date for the striker.

The England international has made just seven league starts this season after suffering four separate injury setbacks.

He sustained his latest problem during a 2-1 Premier League defeat at home to Manchester United on March 22.

And although he did appear in Liverpool's next two matches -- a 4-1 league defeat at Arsenal on April 4 and a 1-0 FA Cup quarterfinal victory at Blackburn four days later -- he has not played since.

Asked for how long Sturridge would be out, Rodgers said: "We're unsure at this moment. He's certainly not available for the weekend."

Midfielder Lucas Leiva remains absent with the thigh problem that forced him to miss last Sunday's FA Cup semifinal defeat against Aston Villa at Wembley, while centre-back Mamadou Sakho is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Adam Lallana is back in training after a month out with a groin problem, and indicated in an interview with the club's website on Thursday that he was ready to return.

Lallana said: "I had a groin issue. I've had a couple of them this season, but I'm back on top of it now, which is good. I'm back fit now, 100 per cent, and have trained the last two days."

Rodgers was a little more cautious on Lallana, saying that "we'll see how he is for the weekend," while confirming that full-back Jon Flanagan is back in full training after missing the entire season to date with a knee injury.

The manager said: "Jon Flanagan is now training with the team. He's obviously a way off fitness, and we just need to monitor his rehabilitation, and we'll see how he is for the coming games."

Rodgers, meanwhile, said that there was "nothing to report" on the progress of contract talks with Jordon Ibe and Martin Skrtel.

Slovakia defender Skrtel's agent Karol Csonto said this week that agreement on a new contract was close, while reports have suggested that a deal for winger Ibe is also imminent.

Rodgers said: "There's no update on the two boys. Their representatives are speaking with the club, but I've got no update on that."

The manager, meanwhile, remains optimistic that Raheem Sterling will agree a new contract at the end of the season, after vice-captain Jordan Henderson signed a deal on Thursday committing him to the club until 2020.

Sterling and his agent Aidy Ward have postponed contract discussions until the summer, with the England winger admitting earlier this month that he had rejected an offer of £100,000 a week.

Rodgers said: "I've always said that Jordan and Raheem are very important players, and the club are working very hard behind the scenes to ensure that we sign these types of players.

"Raheem's representatives will speak with the club and we hope we'll get that organised as well."
