Jordan Henderson set to sign 5-year deal with Liverpool, sources say

Liverpool vice-captain Jordan Henderson is set to end uncertainty over his future by signing a five-year contract this week, sources have told ESPN FC.

The midfielder's new deal will be worth around £100,000 a week and commits him to staying at Anfield until June 2020, according to sources.

Henderson's future has been the subject of speculation because he has only 14 months to run on his current contract.

The player's representatives and the club have been in talks for several months to extend that deal.

But manager Brendan Rodgers said in early March that he was confident that Henderson would sign.

He said at the time: "I know Jordan Henderson wants to be here at Liverpool. I've got no qualms about that."

Henderson is a contender to become Liverpool's captain when Steven Gerrard leaves for LA Galaxy at the end of the season.

Rodgers has yet to confirm that the 24-year-old will be given the job, and that may yet depend on which players he brings in during the summer.

The manager has the backing of the club's owners to build a squad for next season, despite Liverpool's struggles to qualify for next season's Champions League and their failure to reach the FA Cup final.

Rodgers is looking to sign a striker and a midfielder, as well as strengthen his goalkeeping options.

The manager is still interested in bringing in Burnley forward Danny Ings, whom he tried to sign in January, as well as Manchester City midfielder James Milner.
