Martin Skrtel posts clowns photo on Instagram but will avoid FA action

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel will avoid any further punishment over a social media post that appeared to mock a disciplinary verdict against him.

Skrtel was given a three-match ban on Wednesday for stamping on Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.

A three-person independent Football Association disciplinary committee rejected the centre-back's argument that the stamp was accidental.

Following the verdict, Skrtel posted a photo of three circus clowns on Instagram, without offering any explanation.

The post could be interpreted as criticism of the disciplinary panel's decision, but sources have told ESPN FC that the FA will not be pursuing the matter.

Skrtel was found guilty of violent conduct after he was ruled to have stamped on De Gea in stoppage time at the end of Liverpool's 2-1 Premier League defeat at home to Manchester United on Sunday.

Liverpool have made no comment on the decision to ban Skrtel.

The Slovakia international, 30, will miss the Reds' Premier League matches away to Arsenal on April 4 and at home to Newcastle on April 13, as well as the FA Cup quarterfinal replay at Blackburn on April 8.

He is the second Liverpool player to receive a three-match ban from Sunday's match.

Captain Steven Gerrard will miss the same games after being sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera, 38 seconds after coming on as a half-time substitute.
