Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has revealed that captain Steven Gerrard issued a rallying call to his teammates in the Anfield dressing room after his red card in Sunday's 2-1 defeat against Manchester United.

Gerrard was sent off just 38 second after coming off the bench in one of the biggest games of the Premier League season, which was also his final game against United before he leaves the club to join LA Galaxy in the summer.

The 34-year-old midfielder apologised for his actions in a postmatch interview, and when doing the same with his teammates he also delivered with a caveat of an inspirational message for the final games of the season.

"That's what he is about," Mignolet said. "He spoke to the team after the game inside the dressing room and what was said exactly shall stay in there, but it shows who and what he is off the pitch."

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes his target of 23 points from their final 10 games to get his team back into the Champions League is still in sight, even though they are now five points behind Manchester United after Sunday's setback.

"My message, it was clear and simple -- we have to get over the disappointment, refocus and come back ready for the next game," Rodgers said.

"We have had disappointments this season, and we used them as a great springboard for us. Now we must use this in the same way.

"I set a 10-game objective a couple of weeks back. Built into that was that we were not going to win every single game.

"It's still very much possible for us to go where we want to go, which is the top four. We just need to fight that bit harder and make up a five-point difference.

"After the last performance against United [a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford last December], we went on an incredible run where we didn't lose a league game. We have to do that again, we have to find the same motivation after this defeat."
