Liverpool loan young forward Jerome Sinclair to Wigan for rest of season

Liverpool forward Jerome Sinclair has joined Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season.

The England youth international holds the record as the Reds' youngest first-team player, having made his debut in a 2012 League Cup tie at West Brom, aged 16 years and six days.

But that remains the only senior game he has played for the club, and manager Brendan Rodgers is looking to further his development.

Rodgers has been keen to get some of his emerging young players out on loan this season in order for them to gain experience.

Jordon Ibe benefited from spending the first half of the campaign in the Championship at Derby, while fellow winger Sheyi Ojo is already at Wigan, having joined in February.

Rodgers hopes that Birmingham-born Sinclair, now 18, will become better prepared for regular first-team games at Liverpool by dealing with the pressure of Wigan's battle against relegation from the second tier.

Wigan manager Malky Mackay told his club's website: "We had a long chat with Jerome and we both feel that this is a positive step for him to make in his career, which we hope will benefit both clubs.

"We have to thank Liverpool for allowing him to come to Wigan, but they have seen how well Sheyi is progressing and that we are a club who will nurture a young player with potential.

"We are all hopeful he can make a good contribution during his time here."

Sinclair joined Liverpool from West Brom's youth set-up when he was 14.
