Steven Gerrard could make Liverpool return vs. Burnley - Brendan Rodgers

LIVERPOOL -- Steven Gerrard is in contention to make his return from injury against Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has indicated.

Gerrard, 34, is back in training after missing five matches since limping off with a hamstring injury during the 3-2 Premier League victory over Tottenham on Feb. 10.

The midfielder was ruled out for three weeks at the time of the injury, and his recovery is on course according to Rodgers.

The Anfield boss said: "He's coming along very well. He's building up strength in his hamstring. He's been outside, so he's working very hard, and we hope that in the very near future, he'll be back and available."

Asked if the match against Burnley or Sunday's FA Cup quarterfinal against Blackburn would be too soon for Gerrard, Rodgers said: "We'll see."

The Liverpool manager has been reluctant to rush back his captain, who has suffered two hamstring setbacks in 2015.

Gerrard, who will join LA Galaxy this summer, missed the 2-0 league win at Aston Villa on Jan. 17 after complaining of a tight hamstring.

Rodgers, meanwhile, was coy when asked if he thought there would be many clubs trying to sign Burnley striker Danny Ings at the end of the season.

Liverpool were interested in a deal in January to sign the 22-year-old, who is out-of-contract at Turf Moor in June.

Burnley refused to sell in mid-season, preferring to risk losing Ings on a free transfer as they believe he can score the goals to keep them in the Premier League -- a prize that would be worth fortunes in television revenue.

But asked if he rated Ings and whether he thought there would be heavy interest in the striker come the end of the season, Rodgers side-stepped the question.

He said: "I rate Burnley the team and the manager in particular. Sean Dyche has done an incredible job at Burnley. He's a Premier League manager who is very talented.

"I'm always impressed when I watch Burnley. I watch their work-rate. They've gone away from home in big games and got good results. Collectively as a team, that's their strength.

"Sean has got them very well organised. They've got great motivation in their play and great commitment to try to stay in the league, and they're fighting. They're a team who work well."
