Liverpool's Mario Balotelli: I don't need people to believe in me

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli insists he has not paid any attention to the criticism that has come his way after a frustrating start to life at Anfield.

Balotelli, 24, joined the Reds from AC Milan for 16 million pounds in the summer but has struggled to make a real impact since his arrival, having yet to score in the Premier League this season.

Fans and pundits alike have expressed their disappointment with the Italy international's performances, but the player himself says he is not concerned about what other people have to say about him.

"I don't need people to believe in me so long as I believe in myself," he told Fox Sports Australia. "The important people for me are my family and my few close friends."

Balotelli has not only come in for criticism due to his lack of goals, but also for some of his lacklustre displays.

The striker, however, says he is putting in more work on his game than he has ever done previously and is hopeful that he will soon be rewarded for his efforts.

"I run more than before," he added. "I've never run like this, so I give a half point more [for my rating than I would have given myself two years ago]. Goals, they will come. It is something that's just not coming at the moment."
