Ricardo Ferretti: Tigres will enjoy Campeones win, then think Monterrey

Tigres became the inaugural Campeones Cup champions, defeating Toronto FC thanks to a pair of goals from Jesus Duenas.
Tigres midfielder Jesus Duenas reflects on what it took to overcome Toronto FC and the significance of winning the first Campeones Cup.
Taylor Twellman, Herculez Gomez and Alejandro Moreno share their varying opinions on Toronto FC's approach to the Campeones Cup following their defeat to Tigres.

Campeones Cup: Jesus Duenas (36') Toronto FC 0-1 Tigres

TORONTO -- Tigres coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti was in no mood to be discussing Sunday's Clasico Regio against arch-rival Monterrey on Wednesday, instead insisting that he needs some time to celebrate the 3-1 Campeones Cup victory over Toronto FC.

Tigres won the inaugural edition of the tournament at BMO Field after two goals from Jesus Duenas and an own goal from Toronto's Eriq Zavaleta, with Lucas Janson scoring a late penalty consolation for TFC.

Tigres trump Toronto as Reds' woeful 2018 continues in Campeones Cup

Tigres became the inaugural Campeones Cup champions, defeating Toronto FC thanks to a pair of goals from Jesus Duenas.

Here are three points on Tigres' 3-1 Campeones Cup win over Toronto FC on Wednesday at BMO Field.

1. Tigres' quality rises to the surface

You could say that this was a classic Tigres performance. First there was a feeling-out period, and then once the weaknesses were properly identified, Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti's men went to work.

The lack of communication on a Toronto FC back line consisting of Nick Hagglund, Michael Bradley and Eriq Zavaleta played right into Tigres' hands. The Mexican side...

Jesus Duenas scored twice for Tigres UANL as the Liga MX side beat Toronto FC 3-1 to win the inaugural Campeones Cup on Wednesday night.

Toronto FC earned its place in the contest by winning MLS Cup last December, while Apertura 2017 winners Tigres claimed a spot in the match by virtue of their Campeones de Campeones win over Clausura 2018 champions Santos.

Duenas' first goal on the night came in the 36th minute after he cradled a through ball from Juninho to connect off a difficult angle.

Tigres' Ricardo Ferretti: Toronto FC would among Liga MX's best

TORONTO -- Tigres coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti was effusive in his praise of Wednesday's Campeones Cup opponent Toronto FC, suggesting the Canadian team would challenge for the Liga MX title if it played in Mexico's first division.

Liga MX 2017 Apertura champion Tigres take on reigning MLS champion Toronto in the inaugural Campeones Cup at BMO Field, in a repeat of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal last March, in which the Canadians advanced on away goals.

"I think Toronto is quality, excellent,"...

Jozy Altidore: MLS doing good job at catching up to quality of Liga MX

Alejandro Moreno hands out his awards for Week 29 in MLS, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic's brilliant 500th career goal.
During an interview on the Max & Herc Podcast, Michael Bradley shared his view of his interaction at the weekend with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The FC guys are in agreement with Alejandro Moreno that Toronto FC do not have enough in the tank to make the MLS playoffs.

TORONTO -- Toronto FC striker Jozy Altidore said he believes that top to bottom Liga MX has more quality than teams in MLS, but that MLS has the brighter future.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Wednesday's inaugural Campeones Cup between TFC and Tigres UANL, Altidore noted the structural differences between the two leagues, as well as Liga MX's greater investment in players.

"I think the Mexican league probably still is better in terms of the quality they're able to attract from top to bottom," Altidore...
