Jose Luis Mendilibar sacked as manager of La Liga club Levante

Levante have sacked coach Jose Luis Mendilibar with the side sitting second bottom in La Liga following Saturday's 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Real Madrid.

Levante's decision was announced hours after rock-bottom Cordoba sacked Albert Ferrer and installed former Valencia boss Miroslav Djukic as his replacement.

Levante released a short statement on their website in which they announced that Mendilibar will give a farewell press conference on Tuesday.

"The board appreciates the professionalism that Jose Luis Mendilibar has shown while at the club along with his coaches Inaki Bea and Toni Ruiz, and we wish them luck in the future on both a professional and personal level."

Saturday's heavy defeat against Madrid, in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice, left Levante with five points from their opening eight games, having lost all four of their home games and run up a goal difference of minus 16.

They are only one point above Cordoba, who are yet to win a match this season.

However, they are level with 16th-placed Real Sociedad, who conceded two late goals to lose 2-1 to Getafe on Monday evening.
