Shakespeare helped talk Jamie Vardy out of quitting for Ibiza party rep job

Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare has said he helped talk Jamie Vardy out of quitting football in 2013 to work in Ibiza as a party rep.

Vardy joined Leicester, who were then in the second tier of English football, from Fleetwood in 2012 for a fee reported to be £1 million.

However, he struggled during his first season in professional football and only scored five goals, leading to him considering his future until Shakespeare and then manager Nigel Pearson convinced him of his potential.

"Our job is to support players," Shakespeare said. "Sometimes they do have self-doubt and Jamie would be the first to admit he was going through a rough patch.

"Myself, Nigel [Pearson] and Steve [Walsh, Leicester's former assistant manager and head of recruitment] were here to support him. All we did was told him about his attributes and that we thought he could go on.

"We even mentioned then about not only playing in the Premier League but also he had the attributes to play for the national team. We told him we wanted him and believed in him.

"Thankfully he didn't go to Ibiza. I think he has made the right decision."

Vardy, who has gone on to win the Premier League title and made 16 appearances for England, had previously mentioned the story in his autobiography, "From Nowhere, My Story."

In the book, Vardy had said: "The move to Leicester wasn't working out for anybody and I didn't see any value in going through the motions for the final few months of the season. I was in a downward spiral, where I was drinking too much -- some of it home-brewed -- and not scoring nearly enough.

"My head had gone, and at one stage I had even talked about giving up football and going to work in Ibiza. It was a throwaway comment that probably confirmed what the management team already knew: things weren't going well for their summer signing."

He added: "I was confused and capable of coming out with anything, including that remark to a few teammates that I was thinking about becoming a rep in Ibiza."

He said he had visited Ibiza with Stocksbridge reserves in 2007 and then again in 2008 with his friends "and it represented nonstop partying in my eyes."

In the book, Vardy also recalled the time ahead of the 2010-11 season that he was asked on camera if he could clarify whether he would stay at Halifax Town and replied: "No, I'm signing for Ibiza Town. I'm going to Ibiza on holiday and I'm never coming back!"
