Roberto Mancini is top choice for Leicester City job - sources

Former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is first choice for the Leicester City job but the Premier League champions are also considering other options, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.

Leicester, only a point above the relegation zone, have begun their search for a new manager after deciding to sack Claudio Ranieri just nine months after winning the Premier League.

Although Mancini is their top choice, sources close to the manager told Sky Sports he was not interested and would wait for other opportunities.

Nigel Pearson, Ranieri's predecessor at the King Power, could be in contention for a surprise return with several members of the squad advising the club to bring him back, sources told ESPN FC.

Leicester assistant manager Craig Shakespeare and goalkeeping Mike Stowell will take interim charge of the team ahead for Monday's home game against Liverpool.

Mancini, who spent a short spell on loan at Leicester as a player in 2001, is keen to return to management after leaving Inter Milan in the summer.

The 52-year-old posted a message of support for Ranieri on Twitter on Friday, writing: "I am sorry for my friend #Ranieri. He will remain in the history of @LCFC, in the heart of #Leicester fans and all football lovers."
