Nigel Pearson: Leicester still not safe despite win vs. Newcastle

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson is refusing to take his side's safety for granted despite a 3-0 win over Newcastle that lifts them further away from relegation trouble.

The Foxes eased to victory after Newcastle, who had two men sent off, with a brace from Leonardo Ulloa either side of Wes Morgan's first-half goal.

It was Newcastle's eighth straight defeat, while Leicester have now won five out of their last six games in the Premier League, keeping them well on course for survival.

However, Pearson told BT Sport: "It would be foolish to assume that the job's done, far from it. We have to make sure we finish the season in a positive vein.

"We're getting closer but people will talk about Newcastle's situation. But we're still behind them in terms of points.

"So we've got a better chance and an increasingly better chance. But whatever things are mathematically possible, we've made life slightly more easy.

"We've still got three games left and we play against Southampton at home and then two sides who are really scrapping for their lives in Sunderland and QPR.''

Carver and Newcastle have unsurprisingly come in for criticism, with the club having last won in the league back in late February.

But Pearson had a note of support for his opposite number, adding: "It's not for me to make judgement on what's going on, but clearly it remains hard for somebody of his core values to continue to be pushed in front of cameras and try to justify results.

"It's clear they're good players. What they need to do is to prove that to themselves as much as anybody else. I hope they find the answers.

"Whatever happens, John Carver will come out of this season, maybe not with the prestige that he would like, but I know he's absolutely committed to his job and I wish him well.''
