Leeds to hold vote on centenary badge after backlash over design

Leeds United supporters will vote on the design of a new crest for the club's 2019-20 centenary season.

In a statement on their official website, Leeds confirmed that a vote will take place later this year after a huge number of design ideas were submitted by fans.

"Due to the volume of ideas and designs submitted by fans and their focus around celebrating our 100-year anniversary, we can confirm that we will now be introducing a new club crest on the shirt for the 2019-2020 centenary season and beyond," the statement said.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all fans for the inspiration they have provided which, following further consultation with supporters' groups, will form the basis of a democratic vote later this year.

"We look forward to our loyal and passionate fans selecting a crest that will proudly herald in the next 100 years."

Last month, Leeds said there would be a rethink over the club's new badge after fans reacted with dismay to a design revealed to mark their centenary.

The design, which the club said celebrated "fans at the heart of our identity," showed a fan doing the so-called "Leeds salute."

But a backlash from supporters, thousands of whom signed a petition calling for the badge to be scrapped, meant Leeds went back to the drawing board.
