Iker Casillas says whistling Real Madrid fans have right to think what they like

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has said "everyone has a right to think what they like" after he was whistled by a section of the club's support during the weekend win over Deportivo La Coruna.

Real were far from their best as they ground out a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Isco and Karim Benzema amid a backdrop of simmering discontent following the 4-0 derbi thrashing by Atletico.

Long-serving Casillas bore the brunt of some of that discontent but told Cuatro, in quotes reported by AS: "Everyone has a right to think what they like.

"When the public whistles, it is because they are right to. I can merely go out and play and do my best."

Coach Carlo Anccelotti said Casillas had turned the mood with his performance as the game wore on.

Real's official website quoted him as saying: "There were whistles at the start, but he played really well and had a top game. Those whistles then turned to applause".

The Italian said it was "normal to have criticism" and that it had been "frustrating to lose a derbi game 4-0."

But he added: "The fans helped us a lot, and they understood what the team was going through."

In September, Casillas was whistled by fans as Atletico won 2-1 at the Bernabeu, with Sergio Ramos saying such treatment was affecting his teammate.

Gareth Bale, the world's most expensive player, has also been whistled by Madrid fans, with Ancelotti defending him after the 4-1 home win over Deportivo in January.
