Bastia striker Djibril Cisse admits he could retire at end of the season

Djibril Cisse has told RMC this is likely to be his last season in football as the former Liverpool striker battles with a debilitating hip injury.

Cisse, 33, has played just 20 league games for Ligue 1 outfit Bastia since joining the Corsican club a year ago as he struggles to maintain his fitness.

The ex-Lazio and Panathinaikos man has set his sights on achieving a century of Ligue 1 goals, a mark from which he is four goals shy, but admitted if he does not get them this season, he will likely never do.

He said: "It's problematic not to know if you can train the following day or be in the squad the next weekend. That's not the vision I have of football, of the end of my career. If it continues like this, yes, I think it will be the end.

"For the moment, I will see where I am at the end of the season. But you never know. There are miracles from time to time. We're going to try and finish on a good note. The desire is there, but sometimes the body doesn't follow. You have to respect that."

Cisse receives pain-killing injections to be able to take to the field, and came off the bench in Tuesday's Coupe de la Ligue quarterfinal with Rennes, scoring in his team's 3-1 win.

While the forward, who also had spells at Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers, hopes to go out on the high of an appearance in the final at the Stade de France, he has yet to fully consider what happens after he hangs up his boots, even if he is certain he will remain in the game in some capacity.

He said: "For me, I'm still a player. It hurts to think about afterwards. It would be stupid to throw everything away. It would be good to share my experience with young players or coaches. It would be silly to close the door, to put 15 years of my life to one side."
