Stefano Pioli 'honoured' to stay on as Lazio coach

Lazio coach Stefano Pioli has spoken of his delight at signing a new contract which will keep him at the Rome club until at least June 2017.

Pioli, whose previous deal was due to expire at the end of this month, has been rewarded with a two-year extension after an impressive first season in charge of the Biancoceleste.

The 49-year-old joined Lazio from Bologna last summer and guided the team to a third-placed finish in Serie A, qualifying for the preliminary round of the Champions League.

Lazio also reached the Coppa Italia final but lost 2-1 in extra-time to Juventus.

"I'm proud, happy and honoured," Pioli said to the Italian press on Friday. "This is what we all wanted.

"We did well this campaign and it's a good starting point to do something important next season."

Pioli praised his team's work ethics as key to their successful 2014/15 campaign.

"Every day I saw passion and a will to grow from my squad," he said. "We got important results by showing technical quality but also a lot of confidence in our strength.

"I've really been pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm shown by our fans. We have given a lot but they have given us so much."

Lazio will have the option to prolong Pioli's contract until June 30, 2018 and the coach believes his group have plenty of room for improvement.

"We have great synergy with the club and there is a strong group," Pioli said. "But we cannot forget that in football you always have to prove yourself.

"What has been done is in the past and we have to work towards improving.

"Our work, humbleness and ambition has been a good mix to obtain good results this campaign. We will need those again to do well next campaign.

"We are Lazio and we need to try to win as many games as possible."
