LA Galaxy promote Curt Onalfo to head coach to replace Bruce Arena

The LA Galaxy named Curt Onalfo as head coach on Tuesday, promoting their former reserve team boss to replace Bruce Arena.

Onalfo, who has previous MLS head coaching experience in D.C. and Kansas City, takes the top job after Arena left to take over the United States national team for the second time last month.

The Brazilian-born former U.S. international, 47, coached the Kansas City Wizards from 2007-09 before one season with D.C. United in 2010.

Onalfo was Arena's assistant in Los Angeles from 2011-14 before taking over USL side LA Galaxy II.

He also served as a U.S. assistant coach from 2003-07 during Arena's first stint with the national team.

"I am extremely excited and honored to become head coach of the LA Galaxy," Onalfo said in a club statement. "From my time as a player and a coach here, I know that this is the preeminent soccer club in the United States and I look forward to leading this team going forward.

"We have put together a fully-realized developmental system for our players and we will continue to be aggressive in signing world-class talent in order to build the most complete roster to compete for MLS Cup titles each season."

Onalfo was an original Galaxy player in 1996 and also spent time with D.C. and San Jose in his playing career.

As coach of Kansas City, he reached the conference final in 2007 but was fired two years later. His time at D.C. lasted 18 matches, in which United won only three games.

He's had more success in USL, leading LA Galaxy II to the Western Conference title in 2015.

"We have full confidence in Curt's leadership, ability and dedication to lead the LA Galaxy as our next head coach," Galaxy president Chris Klein said.

"In addition to his experience and knowledge of Major League Soccer as both a player and a coach, Curt has an intimate understanding of the structure and culture of this club and has done a tremendous job with LA Galaxy II."
