CARSON, Calif. -- The LA Galaxy plan to introduce their new coach on Tuesday, with reserve team coach Curt Onalfo favored to replace Bruce Arena.
Team president Chris Klein, general manager Peter Vagenas and AEG president Dan Beckerman will be on hand for the news conference at StubHub Center in Carson.
Curt Onalfo, the manager of the Galaxy's USL reserve team Galaxy II since 2014, is widely expected to be the choice, while former Sounders coach Sigi Schmid is also a candidate.
Onalfo has been a member of the Galaxy coaching staff since 2011 and was the head coach of Kansas City from 2007-09 and D.C. United for part of the 2010 season.
After leading LA to three MLS Cup titles, Arena returned to the U.S. national team last month, vacating his jobs as coach and GM of the Galaxy. Vagenas was promoted to GM and has been involved in the team's search for a new coach.
A new coach is just one of the major changes facing the MLS team after the departures of Arena and international players Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard last month. The Galaxy finished sixth in the Western Division and lost in the conference semifinals.
On Monday, the team acquired the rights to midfielder Miguel Aguilar and a 2019 natural fourth-round MLS SuperDraft pick from D.C. United in exchange for the Galaxy's 2018 fourth-round MLS SuperDraft pick.
The 23-year-old Mexican made 23 appearances for D.C. United since being drafted in the first round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.
Also on Monday, the team exercised contract options on defenders Ashley Cole, Daniel Steres and Dave Romney; forwards Jack McBean, Bradford Jamieson IV, Ariel Lassiter and Jose Villarreal; midfielders Rafael Garcia, Baggio Husidic and Raul Mendiola and goalkeeper Clement Diop.
The team did not exercise the option of Brazilian defender Leonardo.
Besides Keane and Gerrard, other players out of contract are forward Landon Donovan, forward Alan Gordon, midfielder Jeff Larentowicz, forward Mike Magee and defender Oscar Sorto.
Donovan returned for the final six weeks of the season after an 18-month retirement, and Klein told the Los Angeles Times last week that the former U.S. star would not be returning, though there has yet to be official confirmation from the club or the player.
