Mabedi replaces Paintsil at Kaizer Chiefs

South African Premier Soccer League giants Kaizer Chiefs have appointed former Malawi international Patrick Mabedi as the club's new assistant coach.

Mabedi will work under head coach Steve Komphela as a replacement for former Ghana international John Paintsil, who left the club suddenly last week.

The 43-year-old Mabedi played for Chiefs for eight seasons between 1998 and 2006, and leaves his post as head coach of National First Division side Cape Town All Stars to take up the role.

"I am happy to be back home," Mabedi said. "I look forward to making a contribution to the success of this great institution. This is a privilege. I wish to thank the club management for this opportunity."

Chiefs will be hoping that Mabedi can repeat some of his trophy success as a player at Naturena after a barren two seasons for the club.

The ex-defender won two league titles and the 2001 African Cup Winners' Cup among other pieces of silverware and spent three seasons as club captain.
