Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri escapes punishment for referee rant

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has escaped punishment for insulting the fourth official during his side's 2-1 defeat at Fiorentina at the weekend since no mention of it was made in the referee's report.

While Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has been handed a two-game touchline ban for similar behaviour in his side's 1-0 defeat to Lazio, Allegri's words have gone unpunished since the Lega Serie A has no powers to consult television evidence in such situations.

Allegri was caught by the Sky Sport cameras clearly using insulting and threatening words in a confrontation with fourth official Elenito Di Liberatore in stoppage time of his side's defeat in Florence, but this was not reported by the official.

Since there was no initial case to be heard, the Lega Serie A does not have the powers to consult video evidence retrospectively, unless they are made aware of possible acts of violence or anti-sporting gestures.

Gasperini, on the other hand, was sent to the stands in his game and, consequently, he has been punished for anti-sporting behaviour which was addressed during the game by the match officials present.

"The two-game ban to Gasperini is due to his dismissal by the referee due to insults he made towards the fourth official, in addition to insults he made to the referee as he left the field of play, all of which was noted in the referee's report," explained sports lawyer Mattia Grassani in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"[Allegri] got nothing because the fourth official at Fiorentina-Juventus did not call the referee to inform him what was happening on the touchline and suggesting that he should take any disciplinary measures, nor did he include it afterwards on the referee's report in the area where they mention the behaviour of the staff on either bench.

"Like it or not, this is what the sporting justice code states and this is the judgment which must be adhered to."

Gasperini is therefore banned from the touchline and dressing room for his side's fixtures with Sampdoria and Torino, while Allegri will be in his customary position for the Bianconeri's clash with Lazio on Sunday.
