Massimiliano Allegri 'very happy' with Juventus performance

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri was pleased with his side's performance in the Bianconeri's 1-0 Champions League defeat of Manchester City on Wednesday.

A first-half Mario Mandzukic goal ensured qualification for the hosts, who are looking to return to the tournament's final after losing out to Barcelona last season.

The victory was the second for his young side over the Premier League heavyweights this campaign, and Allegri believes, while there's still room for improvement, The Old Lady were deserved winners in Turin.

"I am very happy with the performance. The lads did well and it's not easy to qualify with a game to spare from such a tough group," Allegri said after the win.

"Keeping a clean sheet was an important element too. The credit goes to the team who played well against a side of great quality.

"We must do better, as we have to put together consistent growth and learn how to control the various moments of the match, as we still have a lot of young and inexperienced players. Winning must become normal again."

Signed this summer, Mandzukic was played as the main striker ahead of Alvaro Morata, who scored the winner when the teams met in Manchester earlier in the competition.

Highly-rated Paulo Dybala gave another strong performance in his role as second striker after netting the winner against AC Milan at the weekend. While fellow new signing Alex Sandro again manned the left-back role for veteran Patrice Evra, and provided the assist for the Croatian's goal.

"The decision to use Mandzukic in place of Morata was made two days ago. I needed Morata more for what he could give in the second half when City were getting tired.

"Alex Sandro did very well this evening and he is an excellent signing. Players like him need to be allowed to settle in, as nobody is ready to give their best in a new environment straight away. He did well in attack and defence, while Patrice Evra guaranteed experience in a delicate moment of the match.

"Paulo Dybala is learning more and more to connect with the midfield and become a support striker. On the other hand, Morata is learning more how to be a genuine centre-forward."
