Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini out for three weeks as injury crisis deepens

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri is facing a defensive injury crisis after Giorgio Chiellini was ruled out of action for three weeks.

Chiellini, 30, is out for 20 days with a torn thigh muscle sustained during the Bianconeri's 2-1 friendly win over Lechia Gdansk.

Andrea Barzagli is out with a torn groin muscle and both defenders are set to miss the Supercoppa against Lazio on Aug. 8, which leaves Juve heading into the new season short on numbers at the back.

Juve could be set to make a move for Bayern Munich defender Medhi Benatia to bolster the squad, reports Il Corriere dello Sport.

The Turin club had cast an eye over the 28-year-old Morocco international earlier this summer, but he cooled speculation last month by telling Mountakhab TV he has a contract with Bayern "and I want to respect it."

The former Roma defender has a reported price tag of around €25 million after making just 11 league starts for Bayern last season following a €28m move from the Giallorossi.

Medhi Benatia won the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich last season, but made just 11 league starts.

With Holger Badstuber, who is rated highly by Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, set to return from injury, Benatia's opportunities in Bavaria may be further limited this season and making a return to Serie A could be an attractive prospect.

Juve head into the Supercoppa in Shanghai next weekend with only Leonardo Bonucci and Daniele Rugani as recognised central defenders, in addition to the versatile Martin Caceres.

With Barzagli missing much of last season due to injury, and doubts persisting about his fitness, signing another central defender is one of Allegri's final objectives this summer.

The Juve coach often played with a back three last season, an option he currently does not have with two central defenders out injured.
