Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon proud of Champions League runners-up medal

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon says his Champions League runners-up medal will be taking a proud place in his home rather than being hidden away in a drawer, like some of his teammates plan to do with theirs.

Leonardo Bonucci and Claudio Marchisio have both said they cannot bear to look at the medal they received in Berlin after last Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Barcelona. While Buffon can understand their reasoning, he says he will instead draw inspiration from seeing his medal, even if it was not the colour he was hoping for.

"I like to hear players like Bonucci stating that they don't want a silver medal, because that's synonymous with a winning mentality," Buffon said at a news conference while on international duty with Italy. "However I, being a bit older, am proud of that second place.

"Looking at that medal will give me even more venom and hunger to gain revenge, if we are to face Barcelona again in the future."

Buffon hopes the medal will have a similar effect on another veteran in the Juve side, Andrea Pirlo. He has been linked with anything from moving to the United States to retiring this summer, but Buffon says the decision will be entirely up to him.

"Andrea needs to understand how much desire he has to rebound from this with another challenge and to ride the wave again or not," Buffon said. "These decisions require a few days of thought and I've not been able to work him out yet.

"Certainly he's got to imagine a future in keeping with his own desires and with the energy he's got."
