Diego Forlan's contract at J-League side Cerezo Osaka not extended

OSAKA, Japan -- Uruguay forward Diego Forlan will not be offered a contract extension, the president of his J-League second-division side Cerezo Osaka said on Saturday.

Forlan's contract, worth a reported $5.8 million, expires at the end of July.

The 36-year-old Forlan joined Cerezo in 2014 from Brazil's Internacional and scored seven goals in 26 appearances in the top flight last season, but Cerezo were relegated to J2. He has scored 10 goals in 16 games this season.

Forlan was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the 2010 World Cup and was joint top-scorer with five goals, bringing his international total to 36 since his World Cup debut in 2002.

He announced in March he was retiring from international football.

His career has included stints at Manchester United, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.
