FIFA to investigate Serge Aurier for throat-slit gesture with Ivory Coast

FIFA are investigating Paris Saint-Germain's Serge Aurier after the defender's apparent use of a throat-slitting celebration during Ivory Coast's 3-1 win over Mali last weekend.

With the scores level at 1-1 after 31 minutes in the World Cup qualifier, the 23-year-old right-back's cross was turned into his own net by Salif Coulibaly to give the Elephants a 2-1 lead at Stade de Bouake.

Aurier then allegedly made the gesture as he celebrated his role in the goal and FIFA confirmed to the AFP on Thursday that "a preliminary investigation is underway."

The PSG player has found himself in the news a lot recently, with the investigation into his gesture just the latest in a line of incidents featuring the former Toulouse and RC Lens man.

Mali coach Alain Giresse and national team coordinator Fousseni Diawara praised Aurier for helping to save the life of Moussa Doumbia after he suffered an epileptic fit during the match.

However, he was suspended by PSG after insulting former coach Laurent Blanc in Periscope footage, and is awaiting the result of an appeal against a "convertible" two-month prison sentence after being charged with assaulting a police officer.

Former PSG player Clement Chantome, who knows Aurier, recently said he was concerned about the defender's "disturbing" behaviour.
