Mario Balotelli in line for Italy recall, four years after last cap

Newly appointed coach Luigi Di Biagio could recall Mario Balotelli to the Italy squad for the March friendlies against England and Argentina, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

The former under-21 boss is now temporarily in charge of the Azzurri and is considering giving the Nice striker a chance, four years after his last cap for Italy.

Balotelli is enjoying the best season of his career so far, having scored a personal record of 19 goals in 25 games for the French outfit. The striker has also scored 13 goals in 33 caps for Italy, the last one against England at the World Cup in 2014.

Di Biagio is also expected to recall goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and defender Giorgio Chiellini for the next two games, in order to give continuity to a much-needed reconstruction of the Italy national team, after failing to qualify for this summer's World Cup.

Meanwhile, Italy's FA vice president Alessandro Costacurta is on the lookout for the next permanent coach to take over of the squad.

Former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has been linked to the job, but Costacurta is also monitoring Antonio Conte's difficult situation at Chelsea.

Conte was in charge of the Azzurri during the last European Championship, where Italy lost to Germany in the quarterfinals on penalties.
