Sebastian Giovinco's omission for Italy squad still baffles agent

Sebastian Giovinco's agent says he is still amazed that the midfielder was left out of Italy's squad for Euro 2016.

Italy coach Antonio Conte overlooked Giovinco, who was Major League Soccer's top scorer last season with 22 goals in 33 games for Toronto FC, as well as Andrea Pirlo, who moved to MLS' New York City FC last year, when he named his 23-man squad for the European Championship.

Conte said both players were aware that by playing in the USA their chances of playing for him were reduced, but Giovinco's agent Andrea D'Amico says he still does not understand why.

"Considering that over the course of the season he had scored more goals than the whole of the Italy attack, and that Conte was the man who really wanted him at Juventus, the decision [to leave him out] seemed to be quite unmotivated," D'Amico told Mediaset television

"You've got a lad who was the top goal scorer in his first year in America, who provided lots of assists and the player who scored the second best goal in a league which is certainly not like the Chinese one.

"I never saw any technical explanation for it. It's nothing to do with distance either, because if that were the case then all of the Argentinians who play in Italy wouldn't be considered for their country either."

Giovinco is currently fifth in this season's MLS scoring charts with eight goals, four fewer than New York City FC's David Villa, although he has also provided seven assists, placing him joint third in that classification.

It remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old will be given another chance for Italy under new coach Giampiero Ventura, who will be officially unveiled at the weekend.

Ventura's squad selection will not come until the end of August, however, for the start of Italy's 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign in September.
