Antonio Conte: Italy deserved more than a draw against Romania

Italy coach Antonio Conte felt his team deserved more than a draw in Tuesday's international friendly against Romania in Bologna.

Bogdan Stancu put Romania ahead before goals from Claudio Marchisio and substitute Manolo Gabbiadini gave the Italians a 2-1 lead.

However, substitute Florin Andone's late equaliser made it 2-2 and denied Italy victory in their last game of 2015.

"It's a shame, as we fully deserved to win this game in every way," Conte said to Italian TV station Rai. "We were tense at the start because we conceded early on and then as time wore on, we shook it off.

"I am convinced the players gave their all, played with intensity, tempo and everything needed to win.

"It's a pity as when you play with this intensity and create so many chances, you have to win."

The Italians did not take a shot on target in the opening half but Conte was pleased with his team's reaction after the restart.

Italy scored twice against a Romania side that boasted the best defensive line in Euro 2016 qualifiers with just two goals given away in 10 games.

"It remains a good performance," Conte said. "But we are nevertheless disappointed that we didn't win because of a goal conceded two minutes from time.

"I was already angry with the heavy defeat in Belgium, so once again we failed to get the result we deserved."

The Azzurri, who went unbeaten in qualifying to seal a spot at Euro 2016 as Group H winners, went into the encounter at the Renato Della' Ara stadium having failed to win their previous three friendlies this year, including Friday's 3-1 defeat at Belgium.

Conte knows his side has plenty of room for improvement, especially in defence.

"Romania had two shots on goal and scored twice," Conte said. "We have to be more focused and avoid giving away these goals.

"Hopefully it can be a learning experience as we try to grow in view of our next games."

Italy take on defending European champions Spain and Germany in two friendlies in March in preparation for Euro 2016.

"There are still four months to go before those games," Conte said. "We just hope to have our players healthy.

"The friendlies against Spain and Germany are important and we will try to prepare the best we can."
