FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio: Let Italy's stadiums stage lap dancing

The president of the Italian FA (FIGC) says stadiums should also be opened for pharmacies, cinemas, supermarkets and even lap dancing if they are to prove economically viable.

Speaking at a hearing into alleged mafia influence at grounds in Italy, Carlo Tavecchio said the country's football venues were not being exploited to the full because they only staged matches every other week.

"There shouldn't only be football in stadiums, there should also be pharmacies, cinemas, supermarkets -- we need to have more social activities," FIGC reported Tavecchio as saying. "There could even be lap dancing."

Juventus and Udinese have both built new grounds in recent years, but most date back more than 25 years with little renovation work having been carried out since.

Roma are bidding to build a new stadium but are still waiting for final approval, while both Milan clubs have considered moves in recent years.

Crowds have been declining -- with the state of stadiums seen as a contributing factor along with ticket touting -- and Tavecchio said: "We have a handicap with our stadiums being inferior to the European average, also in terms of security.

"The new concept in Turkey with regards to photographic identification changes the whole system and that should be applied to the actual ticket holder at the gates.

"The DASPO [stadium banning order for antisocial behaviour] has delivered results, but controlling the DASPO is not very effective.

"I totally agree that ticket touting should be made a criminal act as this would be a notable deterrent."
