Former Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has given his approval to Luciano Spalletti being appointed the Nerazzurri's new coach in a move which would have a domino effect on Serie A coaching positions.
Spalletti, whose contract with Roma is up for renewal, is favourite to take over as Inter coach having stated several times that he would leave the Giallorossi if he fails to deliver any silverware this season. Heading into the final round of matches this season, the best Roma can do is hold second position and qualify for the Champions League group stage.
Inter, who changed coach three times this season, are keen to get an experienced coach next term, with Antonio Conte reportedly their first-choice target and Spalletti seen as the closest fit of those coaches who would be available. Moratti says it would be an intelligent choice.
"I've read about Spalletti and for me he would be the ideal profile," Moratti told Rete Sport. "He's intelligent, he has gained experience abroad and he has done a great job at Roma. I think he would do well at Inter.
"I think Inter have some decent players and if they can get a coach in who can do his own job in peace and quiet from the start of the season, with the quality of Spalletti, then I think there is a high chance of them doing well. Inter's owners are good and I think they will get results in the end."
With Spalletti set to move on, Roma must find a new coach for next season and Sassuolo coach Eusebio Di Francesco has emerged as their No. 1 target. He is due to hold talks with Sassuolo president Squinzi on Saturday, prior to Sunday's trip to Torino, and it appears his five-year spell with the club could be drawing to an end.
He has a €3 million release clause in his contract and after guiding Sassuolo to an unprecedented qualification for the Europa League last year, he is rated highly in Serie A. Furthermore, he used to play for Roma and would therefore be a popular choice among the fans.
According to Wednesday's La Gazzetta dello Sport, he has already been offered a contract with Roma, which he could sign on Monday, when Spalletti's future should also be clarified.
Another candidate for the Roma job is Paulo Sousa, who is expected to leave Fiorentina after failing to lead them into Europe this season. His almost inevitable departure would also leave a vacancy at the Viola, and that is set to be filled by Stefano Pioli, who was sacked by Inter last month.
A former Fiorentina captain, Pioli would be a welcome choice in Florence, where he would be expected to lead them into Europe next season after previously succeeding in that undertaking with Lazio.
Monday could therefore see a lot of movement on the Serie A benches with clubs keen to get their coaches under contract early on so they can start planning for a season which will see four places on offer to Italian clubs in the Champions League.
