Giampiero Ventura to give Federico Chiesa Italy training camp chance

Italy coach Giampiero Ventura has said he wants to take a look at Fiorentina's Federico Chiesa when he holds a training camp in February.

Ventura is expected to use the opportunity to evaluate players on the fringes of the national team, and Chiesa's performance in Fiorentina's weekend win over Juventus has attracted the coach's attention.

"He had already been pointed out to me and I saw him in the game against Juventus and it was a pleasant surprise," Ventura told reporters in Florence.

"I think that if nothing happens between now and when I name my squad for the training camp he will be called up, because if he carries on playing this way it's only right that he joins us."

Ventura said he had every intention of giving younger players their chance, adding that the transfer of Roberto Gagliardini from Atalanta to Inter Milan in the summer had shown he was right to call him up last year.

"People were saying to me: 'How can you go calling him up when he's hardly played?' and now everybody is talking about him," he added.

"We are working on ensuring he becomes everything he can become and that he can be a backbone of the future Italy national team.

"This all just confirms that we have so many more good young players than people imagine. The press might be discovering them just now, but I already knew them and had spotted them.

"Now people are starting to realise that I was serious with the things I said in the past."

After initially appearing to rule out a place for Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi, in his plans for next month's training camp, Ventura said he would give the 22-year-old a chance.

"Berardi will be called up, as he should be. We need wide players and so we'd be delighted to have Berardi," he added.

"I remain absolutely convinced that what everybody thought is actually happening, in that we have players who just need time to become the protagonists of the future Italy team."
