Juventus thrash Cagliari after Derby defeat; Roma, Inter Milan cruise

Defending champions Juventus bounced back from Sunday's Derby d'Italia loss to Inter Milan with a 4-0 hammering of Cagliari in Wednesday Serie A action.

Strikes from Daniele Rugani, Gonzalo Higuain and Daniel Alves as well as a Luca Ceppitelli own goal helped the Old Lady move on from a disappointing night at the San Siro at the weekend.

Rugani opened the scoring early, sweeping home from close range in the 14th minute after Higuain's shot was parried into his path by Cagliari goalkeeper Marco Storari.

Record-signing Higuain doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, coolly stroking home the rebound after Miralem Pjanic's close-range shot was saved by Storari.

Fellow new signing, Alves, made it 3-0 six minutes before the break -- the former Barcelona man's low shot taking a slight deflection before finding the bottom corner from a corner kick situation.

Ceppitelli then completed the rout in the 83rd minute as Mario Lemina's saved shot struck the covering defender before rolling into the net.

Meanwhile, Roma rebounded from their first league loss of the season to similarly cruise past Crotone 4-0 in the capital.

First-half goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Mohamed Salah sent the hosts on their way against the newly-promoted side, and a second-half brace from Edin Dzeko ensured the rout for Luciano Spalletti's men.

El Shaarawy opened Roma's account by picking out the top right corner with his right foot after Alessandro Florenzi had found him in the centre of box on 26 minutes.

Salah doubled the advantage for the Romans 11 minutes later -- El Shaarawy this time playing provider as the Egypt international shot high into net from the left side of the box.

Dzeko then took over soon after the break. The Bosnia striker scored his first on 48 minutes, lobbing charging Crotone keeper Alex Cordaz from outside of the box after receiving a perfectly-measured ball from Francesco Totti behind the defence.

The former Manchester City man completed his double nine minutes later, steering in Salah's cross from the right with the inside of his right boot from close range.

Mauro Icardi bagged a brace to reach the top of league's scoring charts as Inter Milan claimed a 2-0 win against Empoli in Tuscany.

The Argentinian striker notched twice inside the opening 17 minutes to continue his fine start to the season, form which has helped Inter reach the upper echelons of the table in recent weeks.

Empoli suffered a second home defeat of the new term and are just outside the drop zone.

Still buzzing after scoring the winner against Juve, Icardi was rampant at the Stadio Carlo Castellani and grabbed his first goal after just 10 minutes.

After racing down the right wing, Antonio Candreva provided the cross for Icardi to head past goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski for a fifth strike in four games.

He made it six in four only seven minutes later. This time Joao Mario stole the ball in midfield and set up Icardi, who had to merely roll the ball past Skorupski.

Napoli's hot streak came to an end at Genoa as dropped points from a 0-0 draw saw them surrender the top spot.

Boosted by the goals of Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik, last season's runners-up had stormed into the early lead in 2016-17, but they hit a brick wall at the Luigi Ferraris.

Fiorentina twice came from behind to secure a point in a 2-2 draw at Udinese.

The hosts went in front after 26 minutes when Rodrigo De Paul picked out Duvan Zapata to slot home, but Paolo Sousa's side levelled moments later when Cristian Tello's pass was expertly back-heeled into the net by Senegal international Khouma Babacar.

Udinese regained their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Thomas Heurtaux's cross was met by Danilo at the back post.

But Federico Bernardeschi equalised from the spot in the second half after Ali Adnan was adjudged to have tripped Babacar in the box.

A stunning goal from Simone Verdi helped Bologna secure a 2-0 victory over Sampdoria at the Renato dall'Ara.

Samp resisted Bologna's numerous attempts to break the deadlock until, just before half-time, former AC Milan striker Verdi drove home Ladislav Krejci's cross with a searing volley.

Chievo continued their fine start to reach fourth with a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo.

The win made it 10 points from five games thanks to goals from Nicola Rigoni and Lucas Castro.

Ilija Nestorovski's late goal fired Palermo to a 1-0 triumph at struggling Atalanta, while tempers flared during a goalless draw between Pescara and Torino, with the visitors to the east coast losing both Afriyie Acquah and Giuseppe Vives.
